Just as the golden hues of autumn set in, Sotheby’s Australia auctioned a significant natural Australian Yellow Sapphire at its May Important Jewels auction achieving $122,000, including buyer’s premium. Weighing 35.73 carats the ‘Willows’ sapphire was discovered on the Willows field in Central Queensland in 1946 and has been described as ‘unrivalled’ and ‘magnificent’ by the American Gem Laboratory. Drawing attention from across the globe the sale marked the auction of the largest natural yellow sapphire ever offered at auction in Australia.
